Toxic hair products have made their way into almost all of our homes, if not all, at some point. It’s the norm to go to the store and grab a few favorite hair products not knowing what’s hidden in them.
Many hair products today are loaded with harmful ingredients whether you are aware of this or not. Is this a big deal? Should you stop using your favorite shampoo, conditioner, or hair gel?
In this post, I will be sharing some reasons why you should think about replacing your toxic hair products with safer, more natural, and non-toxic products. You might be thinking that you cannot give up your favorite shampoo or conditioner because it smells good or because you’ve been using it since you were a child. But, there are great options for shampoo without harmful ingredients, natural conditioners, eco-friendly deep conditioners, etc. Nowadays there are more options for buying without toxic ingredients in hair products.

4 Reasons To Stop Using Toxic Hair Products
Toxic products not only cause harm to your hair, but they also can cause harm to your body as a whole. Here are some reasons why you should stop using these harmful products.
1. High risk of skin irritation and conditions
Your hair products can be a huge reason why you may be experiencing skin irritation. Chemical loaded hair products can cause acne, breakouts, scalp irritation, etc.
2. Causes dry hair, dry scalp, & brittle hair
Conventional hair products may give the appearance of smooth hair when in actuality it’s causing so much damage. Common ingredients in toxic hair products cause the hair strands to break down which makes them weak and brittle. Other harsh ingredients can strip your hair’s natural oils making it dry, frizzy, and lifeless.
3. Disrupts hormones
Many chemicals in shampoos, conditioners, hair sprays, etc. are endocrine disrupters; they interfere with your hormones.
4. High risk of eye irritation
Eye irritation can be a result of chemicals in your hair products. I use to get eye irritation all the time before switching to safer hair products. If you always get eye irritation after washing your hair then it’s time to evaluate your hair products.
How to check toxins in products?
One of the best ways to check for toxins in products is by reading the ingredient list. A good rule of thumb is if there are words on the list that you cannot pronounce then it’s probably toxic. This isn’t always true of course.
Is there a hair care ingredients checker?
I always recommend reading the ingredients for yourself on the bottle or jar, but having an app do it for you comes in handy!
