BEST HEALTHY EVENING SNACKS:
Yes, it’s okay to enjoy a small snack before bed. Some snacks can help you sleep better because of their sleep-supportive properties or they can help stabilize your blood sugar which helps you stay asleep.
Another plus is that all of these snacks are gluten-free!
Quick Healthy Evening Snacks
1. Plain yogurt with berries and nuts
This is one of my favorite healthy late night snacks! Sometimes I even have this for breakfast. It’s so simple yet so delicious. I like to use plain coconut yogurt. Try to stay away from yogurts with tons of additives and ingredients that you cannot pronounce.
All you will need is some nuts, 3/4 cup of yogurt, and some berries. Add them to a bowl and now you have a perfect quick evening snack. The berries become a natural sweetener so there is no need to add sugar to the yogurt, but if you would like a bit more sweetness drizzle on some honey.
2. Handful of nuts
This snack would probably win first place for the quick evening snacks award if there was ever such a thing. It’s so simple and easy that it doesn’t take much effort at all.
Nuts are jam-packed with good-for-you stuff…nutrients, fiber, antioxidants, and so on! If you struggle to properly digest nuts, if you want to reap more of the benefits that they contain, or if you want to decrease the enzyme inhibitors that naturally occur in them, then try soaking and sprouting the nuts before consuming.
3. Boiled eggs
Boiled eggs are another simple healthy evening snack. Boiled eggs are a great snack for any time of the day…actually all of the snacks in this post are.
Eggs are one of the foods that contain more than one macronutrient. Eggs contain protein and fats. To prepare the eggs, boil them to your desired consistency. Once you have boiled your eggs you can choose to sprinkle a little bit of salt and black pepper on top.
4. Apples with peanut butter
Apple slices with peanut butter are a staple! It is one of the best healthy late night snacks out there. Just grab your favorite jar of peanut butter, preferably organic with no additional ingredients, then slice up one apple, and there you go! A perfect late-night snack. Dip the apple slices into the peanut butter and enjoy.
To spice things up a little, no pun intended, add some cinnamon and nutmeg to the peanut butter. For a slightly different flavor, substitute a Korean pear for the apple.
5. Tart cherries
Having tart cherries as a quick evening snack is so simple, but that’s not the only reason to try tart cherries as your healthy late night snack. Tart cherries can also help you sleep better at night because they naturally contain melatonin which helps regulate the sleep-wake cycle.
So grab some tart cherries and enjoy them before bed.
6. Tea with a scoop of collagen
This isn’t really a snack, but having tea before bed is an amazing nighttime ritual. Having tea in the evening can make you feel more relaxed especially if it’s a tea like chamomile. Tea itself is great, but if you add a scoop of collagen it becomes better! Collagen has gut healing properties so that’s a huge plus.
Add a scoop of grass-fed collagen to a cup of non-caffeinated tea.
7. Dates with nut butter
Dates are a natural sweetener and they are used in many baked goods. Grab a few dates, slice them down the middle and add some of your favorite nut butter inside. Dates are also high in fiber, so you’ll sleep well knowing that your morning bathroom routine will likely come with ease.
Not only are dates high in fiber, but they also contain nutrients and antioxidants.
Okay, I LOVE popcorn as a healthy late night snack. For this snack, you’ll need some popcorn seeds and coconut oil. Grab a pot and add some coconut oil to it. Then add the popcorn seeds. Pop the popcorn according to the package.
There are so many different things you can add to the popcorn to add flavor. While popcorn is delicious by itself, try adding some cashews for some protein.
Another healthy evening snack is avocado. It’s simple and it’s tasty. Who says healthy late night snacks have to be bland and boring? If you want, you can pair the avocado with dried seaweed. Cut open the avocado and then slice it. Put slices of avocado on each seaweed sheet, roll it up, and eat up!
If you have some sesame seeds on hand, sprinkle some on the avocado before rolling the seaweed.
Avocado is a healthy fat and fat has so many benefits and functions in the body. It is also rich in Magnesium, a necessary mineral that has important roles in the body. Magnesium is known for relaxing the body which makes better sleep easier to obtain.
10. Dark chocolate
Dark chocolate is a great evening snack. It contains many minerals including iron and magnesium. Read the ingredient list on the chocolate bar to make sure that you buy quality chocolate. Also, buy dark chocolate that contains at least 70% cocoa.
This is one of my favorite foods to snack on in general and paired with some nuts it just becomes even better.
More Healthy Late Night Snack Ideas
11. Banana and nut butter
For this healthy late night snack, you will need one tablespoon of nut butter and one banana. Slice the banana and top with the nut butter.
Another option is to add the banana slices to a bowl, drizzle the banana with the nut butter, then pour 1/4 cup of milk over the banana and nut butter. Sprinkle some cinnamon after pouring the milk for some extra flavor. Yum! Feel free to use any milk of your choice. I like to use almond milk or coconut milk.
12. Veggies and hummus
You cannot go wrong with veggies and hummus. You can use homemade or store-bought hummus. Whichever you choose you’re sure to enjoy it.
This snack requires a little bit of prep work but nothing too difficult.
Take one cucumber and one medium carrot and cut them into sticks. Enjoy these veggies with hummus by dipping them in.
13. Protein smoothie
Protein smoothies are well known to be the go-to post-workout snack, but you can even have a protein smoothie as your evening snack. There are so many protein smoothie recipes out there, but the basics you’ll need are fruit, some type of liquid, and protein.
Here is a list of ingredients you can blend all together for a simple protein smoothie: Frozen strawberries, frozen banana, filtered water, collagen or protein powder, and shredded coconut.
Not only are kiwis delicious but they are loaded with nutrients and antioxidants. Kiwis are high in Vitamin C and they have many benefits to the body including supporting the digestive and immune systems making it an amazing healthy late night snack.
Kiwis also contain serotonin, which is considered to be a natural mood stabilizer and helps regulate the sleep cycle. This fruit, when eaten at night, can help you sleep better making it a great healthy evening snack.
15. Cucumber bites
Are you ready for another healthy late night snack idea? Cucumber bites!
There are so many toppings you can add to sliced cucumbers to make delicious cucumber bites. You can add hummus, avocado, or even some leftover turkey salad. I, for one, love turkey.
Like many other foods, turkey contains tryptophan. Tryptophan is an essential amino acid that cannot be produced by the body so you must get it from the food you eat.
Our bodies use tryptophan to help produce serotonin and melatonin. Again, melatonin helps regulate the sleep-wake cycle while serotonin is considered to be a natural mood stabilizer and also helps with regulating the sleep cycle.
Cucumbers topped with some turkey salad is an amazing healthy snack that will not only help you feel satiated but will also help you sleep better at night.
16. Chia pudding
This snack requires overnight refrigeration, but the great thing is that it’ll be ready for you when you’re ready to have that evening snack.
Chia seeds are a great source of omega-3s and fiber.
Add a half cup of milk to a jar then add two tablespoons of chia seeds. Give it a good stir and make sure there are no clumps. To the mix, add one teaspoon of raw organic honey and stir it again. Refrigerate overnight then when you are ready add some toppings such as fresh berries.
17. Overnight oats
Overnight oats are great as a healthy evening snack! To ensure that the overnight oats are gluten-free make sure to buy oats that say gluten-free on the packaging.
For a simple overnight oats base, you’ll need oats, your favorite milk, and a sweetener such as honey. There are so many different toppings you can add to your oats. Some toppings you can add are berries, raisins, and nut butter. These are just a few examples.
Refrigerate the oats overnight or for at least 2 hours.
